Chimney Repairs in Coventry
Damp on a chimney breast is almost never rising damp. It is usually water getting in at the top or at the flashing, then running down inside the stack to the first place it can show.

Chimney repairs in Coventry cover repointing eroded mortar joints, renewing the flaunching that caps the stack around the pots, and replacing lead flashings, soakers and trays where the chimney meets the roof. These are the usual causes of damp staining on a chimney breast or on the ceiling beside it. Redundant stacks can also be taken down or capped and weathered properly.
- Damp on a chimney breast is a water-ingress problem at roof level far more often than a damp-course problem.
- A chimney is the most exposed masonry on the house - wind-driven rain hits it from every side.
- Cement fillets where a chimney meets the roof will always crack. Lead is the proper detail.
- Capping a disused stack still needs ventilation, or you move the damp problem inside.
- Scaffolding is usually needed. A chimney is not a ladder job, and anyone offering to do it off one is telling you something.
The work itself, in plain terms
Repointing the stack
Eroded and hollow joints raked out and repointed in a suitable mortar, so wind-driven rain stops soaking straight into the brickwork.
Flaunching renewal
The mortar cap that holds the pots and throws water off the top of the stack. Once it is cracked, every shower runs straight down inside the chimney.
Lead flashings, soakers & trays
Stepped flashings, front aprons, back gutters and lead trays formed and dressed properly where the stack passes through the roof - the single most common leak point.
Replacing cement fillets
Mortar fillets at the roof junction crack as the building moves and then funnel water in. We cut them out and replace them with lead.
Removal, capping & weathering
Redundant stacks taken down below roof level and the roof made good, or capped with a vented cowl or capping so it stays dry and ventilated.
Pots, cowls & bird guards
Cracked or loose pots re-bedded or replaced, and cowls or guards fitted to keep rain, birds and nests out of an open flue.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
The damp patch on the chimney breast explained, traced and fixed at the actual cause, with photographs from the scaffold so you can see what was wrong.
Landlords
Stacks on rental property made weathertight, and disused flues capped and ventilated properly rather than simply sealed.
Terraced & period homes
Shared and party-wall stacks, tall Victorian chimneys and multiple-pot stacks, where access and sequencing matter as much as the masonry.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
A damp patch on the chimney breast in the bedroom that darkens after driving rain from one particular direction.
- 02
Staining on the ceiling right beside the chimney, which is the flashing or the back gutter rather than the stack itself.
- 03
Pieces of mortar from the flaunching landing in the gutter or on the drive.
- 04
A chimney pot visibly leaning, or a cowl that has slipped.
- 05
A disused stack that was sealed with no ventilation, now showing damp and a musty smell inside.
- 06
A cement fillet at the roof junction that has been patched repeatedly and cracked again every time.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Is the damp on my chimney breast rising damp?
Very rarely. On an upstairs chimney breast it cannot be - water does not rise two floors. The usual causes are cracked flaunching at the top, eroded pointing letting wind-driven rain soak the brickwork, or a failed flashing where the stack meets the roof. A proper look from a scaffold tells you which.
Do I need scaffolding for chimney work?
Almost always, yes. A chimney needs working room on more than one face, and the work is too heavy and too long to do safely off a ladder. It is part of the quote, and if someone offers to repoint your stack off a ladder that tells you how the job will be done.
Should I take my chimney down or repair it?
If the flue is used, or might be used again, repair it. If it is genuinely redundant, taking it down below roof level removes the maintenance for good and is often cheaper over time than repeated repairs - but it has to be done with the roof properly made good afterwards.
Can you just cap it off to stop the damp?
A cap stops rain coming down the flue, but a sealed flue with no ventilation traps moisture and you get damp and a musty smell indoors instead. Capping has to be vented, and the stack still needs sound pointing and flaunching above the roof.
Why does my chimney leak only in certain weather?
Because wind-driven rain is directional. A stack with eroded pointing on one face, or a flashing that has lifted on one side, will take water in only when the rain comes from that direction - which is why the stain seems to appear at random until you match it to the wind.
Do you work on flues and fires?
We do the masonry, the flaunching, the leadwork and the weathering - the building side of the chimney. Anything to do with the appliance, the flue lining or burning fuel needs the relevant specialist registration, and we will say so rather than take it on.
