Slate & Tile Roofing in Coventry
A pitched roof is a system of overlaps, and it works until the fixings go. Get the slate or tile right and matched to the house, and the roof disappears into the street as it should.

Slate and tile roofing in Coventry covers natural slate, clay plain tile and pantile, and concrete interlocking tile - on Victorian and Edwardian terraces, 1930s semis and modern estates alike. Work ranges from re-hanging slipped slates and re-bedding ridges to full re-slating where the nails have corroded. The covering is matched to the pitch, the exposure and the look of the street.
- Slates slipping all over a roof rather than in one spot is usually nail sickness, not bad luck.
- Headlap and pitch decide whether a covering will work on your roof - not appearance alone.
- Mortar-bedded ridges and verges are a maintenance item; dry-fix systems are not.
- A discontinued tile profile can often still be matched from reclaimed stock, so a repair need not stand out.
- Walking a slate roof damages it. Proper access is part of the job, not an optional extra.
The work itself, in plain terms
Natural & fibre-cement slate
Re-slating, patch repairs and slip re-hanging, with the right slate size and headlap for the pitch and the exposure rather than whatever is cheapest.
Clay plain tile & pantile
Period clay roofs repaired and recovered, matching profile and colour so a patch does not announce itself from the pavement.
Concrete interlocking tile
The covering on most post-war Coventry estates. Repaired, re-fixed and replaced, including the verges and ridges that fail long before the tiles do.
Ridges, hips & verges
Re-bedding and repointing where mortar has cracked and washed out, or converting to a mechanically fixed dry-fix system so it stops being a recurring job.
Nail sickness & re-fixing
Where corroded fixings are letting go across a whole slope, patching is money down the drain. We will tell you when that point has been reached.
Valleys & abutments
Lead and tiled valleys renewed, and the junctions where a roof meets a wall or another roof detailed properly - the places that leak long before the field does.
Built around how you own the property
Period property owners
Work that respects what the house already is, matching slate and tile rather than imposing a modern covering on a Victorian terrace.
Landlords
Pitched roof work that ends the callouts, with photographs of what was wrong and what it looks like now.
Estate & modern homes
Concrete tile repairs, re-fixing and verge work on 1960s-onwards Coventry housing, where the tiles outlast the mortar by decades.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
Slates slipping one after another across the whole slope, with each repair followed by another a month later.
- 02
Mortar from the verge or ridge appearing in the gutter and on the path below.
- 03
A patch repair done in the wrong tile, so there is now a visible scar across the front of the house.
- 04
Daylight visible through the roof from inside the loft.
- 05
A valley between two roof slopes staining the ceiling below - almost always the valley lining, not the tiles beside it.
- 06
Cracked and slipped tiles after someone walked the roof to clear a gutter or fit an aerial.

Matched to the age of the house
The right covering depends on the roof pitch, how exposed the roof is and what the house already wears. Coventry has a lot of all three main types, often on the same street, and a repair that ignores that is obvious from the pavement.
- Natural slate - Welsh & imported
- Fibre-cement slate
- Clay plain tile & pantile
- Concrete interlocking tile
- Reclaimed & profile-matched stock
- Dry-fix ridge, hip & verge

Speak to us today0786 5778332What is nail sickness?
The slates are sound but the nails holding them have corroded, so slates start slipping across the whole roof rather than in one place. It is the usual reason an old slate roof suddenly needs constant attention, and once it has set in, re-slating is the honest answer - patching simply moves the problem along the slope.
Can you match my existing slates or tiles?
Usually, yes. Current profiles are straightforward, and discontinued ones can often be matched from reclaimed stock. Where an exact match is not possible we will show you the closest option before fitting anything, rather than you discovering it afterwards.
Can you re-point my ridge tiles instead of re-bedding them?
Only if the bedding underneath is still sound - pointing over washed-out bedding looks fine for a season and then falls out again. If the bedding has gone, the ridges come off and are re-bedded, or converted to dry fix so it does not recur.
Is dry fix better than mortar?
For ridges and verges, generally yes: a mechanically fixed system does not crack, wash out or shed mortar, and it ventilates the roof properly. Mortar still has its place on some period details, and we will tell you where we would keep it.
Can I walk on my roof to clear the gutters?
Please do not, especially on slate or clay - they crack under foot and the cracks are not always obvious until it rains. Gutter clearing from a ladder or a tower is a small job and much cheaper than the repairs that follow a walked roof.
Do you do small repairs, or only whole roofs?
Small repairs very much included - a few slipped slates, one cracked tile, a short run of ridge. Most of what we do on pitched roofs is repair work, and we would rather do the small job honestly than talk you into the big one.
