Electricians in Rugby
Most of an electrical installation is invisible, which is why age is a poor guide and testing is a good one. An inspection tells you the condition of what is buried in the walls; the fuse board only tells you what someone fitted last.

We carry out electrical work across Rugby, 10.8 miles east of Coventry city centre — fault finding, additional sockets and lighting, consumer unit replacement, full and partial rewires, and EICR inspection and testing for landlords and homeowners. Work is tested and certificated, and notifiable work is notified.
Working in Rugby
Rugby lies 10.8 miles east of Coventry city centre, in the CV21 postcode district.
Within walking distance you will find St Andrew and Caldecott Park, and we work on properties throughout the streets around them.
The nearest places we also cover are Hinckley (12.5 miles) and Leamington Spa (12.9 miles), so work in Rugby sits well inside the area we travel to, not at the edge of it.
- St Andrew
- Caldecott Park
- Rugby School
- Euro Supermarket
- A new consumer unit does not mean the house has been rewired. The board is visible and the cable is not.
- Lighting circuits before the mid-1960s have no earth, which rules out metal fittings.
- Main earthing and bonding is a safety fundamental and is missing in houses of every decade.
- An EICR is the cheapest way to find out whether you need the expensive work.
- Condition decides whether a house needs rewiring, not the year it was built.
The work itself, in plain terms
Electrical work across Rugby and nearby Hinckley, Leamington Spa and Nuneaton, domestic and commercial.
Rewiring
Full and partial rewires, with a new consumer unit, bonding and certification on completion. Partial only where an inspection shows the rest is sound.
Consumer units
RCD and RCBO protection in a non-combustible enclosure, with the earthing and bonding checked and corrected first.
EICR testing
Electrical installation condition reports for homeowners and landlords, with C1, C2 and C3 codes explained and remedial work quoted separately.
Fault finding
Tracing circuits that trip, intermittent faults and borrowed neutrals, rather than replacing parts until it stops.
Lighting & power
Downlights and LED upgrades, additional sockets, outdoor and garden supplies, with fire-rated fittings where the ceiling requires them.
EV chargers
Home charge points with a dedicated circuit, a load assessment and the earthing arrangement checked properly before installation.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
Honest advice on whether a rewire is needed or whether a partial will genuinely do.
Landlords
Certification kept in order, because that is what an inspection will ask to see.
Older properties
Work that respects what is sound and replaces only what is genuinely past its life.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
An RCD that trips for no apparent reason, caused by a borrowed neutral from two-way lighting altered years ago.
- 02
Metal switch plates fitted to a lighting circuit that has no earth at the switch.
- 03
Lights dimming when an appliance starts, which points at the supply or a poor connection.
- 04
Sockets warm to the touch, or scorch marks at a plug, where a connection has worked loose.
- 05
A modern-looking consumer unit fitted in front of rubber-insulated cable that nobody inspected.
- 06
Notifiable work done with no certificate, which surfaces when the house is sold.
What we check on a property in Rugby
Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on electrical work in Rugby, and why each one changes the recommendation.
Loft and underfloor cabling
We check for cable buried under insulation, which derates it, and for cables resting on ceiling joists where they can be stood on. Both are common and both are straightforward to put right.
Consumer unit location and enclosure
Where the board sits, whether it is accessible, and whether it needs a non-combustible enclosure. Position matters for isolation in an emergency as much as for compliance.
Existing certification
We ask what paperwork exists for previous work. Its presence or absence tells us how much of the installation has been tested before and what a new report needs to cover.
Main supply capacity
We check the main fuse rating and the supply arrangement. It determines whether an EV charger, electric shower or heat pump can be added without the supply being upgraded first.
Fan and extract provision
Bathroom and kitchen extract is an electrical job with a ventilation purpose. We check it exists, actually runs and discharges outside rather than into a loft.
Lighting circuit earthing
Many older lighting circuits have no circuit protective conductor. That rules out metal fittings and switches until it is addressed, and it is one of the most frequent findings on an older property.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Which areas near Rugby do you also cover?
The closest are Hinckley (about 12.5 miles away), Leamington Spa (about 12.9 miles away), Nuneaton (about 13.5 miles away) and Kenilworth (about 13.6 miles away). All of them are inside our normal working area, so a property on the boundary is no different to one in the middle of Rugby. If you are unsure which area you count as, the postcode settles it.
Are you actually local to Rugby?
Yes. Rugby is around 10.8 miles east of the centre of Coventry, well within the area we work in every week. We are not a national firm subcontracting the job out.
What is a consumer unit and why do older ones get replaced?
It is the board that distributes power and holds the protective devices. Older boards have rewireable fuses and no RCD protection, so there is nothing to disconnect quickly if someone touches a live part or a cable is damaged. A modern board adds RCD or RCBO protection per circuit, which is the single biggest safety improvement available on most older installations.
What is an EICR and who needs one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a formal inspection and test of a fixed installation, recording its condition against the current wiring regulations. In England, private rented homes must have one at least every five years and at the start of a new tenancy. Owner-occupiers are not obliged to have one, but it is the standard check before buying, and the usual recommendation is roughly every ten years for an owner-occupied house.
What are the most common electrical problems in older Coventry homes?
The pattern repeats: a board with no RCD protection, lighting circuits with no earth, sockets added over the years onto a circuit that was never designed for them, and a bathroom or kitchen altered without the work being notified. None of it is unusual and most of it is fixable without a full rewire — but it needs testing first to know which category a particular house is in.
Is it worth changing to LED lighting?
Generally yes, for the running cost and the lamp life. Two practical cautions: dimmers made for filament lamps often will not dim LEDs smoothly and may need replacing, and very cheap LED fittings with integrated lamps cannot be re-lamped, so the whole fitting is scrap when the LED fails. Choosing fittings that take a replaceable lamp is usually the better long-term buy.
Do I need a full rewire, or will a partial one do?
A partial rewire is sensible where part of the installation is sound and part is not — commonly where lighting has been updated but the ring final circuits have not, or where an extension was wired recently. It is a false economy where the existing cable is at the end of its life, because the old section will fail next and you pay twice for making good. Testing is what tells the two apart.
