Landscaping in Rugby

Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

In short

Property Maintenance Coventry carries out landscaping in Rugby: patios and paving, driveways, garden and retaining walls, fencing and gates, artificial grass and garden clearance. Levels, falls and drainage are worked out at survey, because they are what separates a surface that lasts from one that moves.

Working in Rugby

Rugby lies 10.8 miles east of Coventry city centre, in the CV21 postcode district.

Within walking distance you will find St Andrew and Caldecott Park, and we work on properties throughout the streets around them.

The nearest places we also cover are Hinckley (12.5 miles) and Leamington Spa (12.9 miles), so work in Rugby sits well inside the area we travel to, not at the edge of it.

Key takeaways
  • Weed membrane stops weeds from below; it cannot stop what blows in and roots on top.
  • Retaining walls fail from water pressure behind them, not from weak brickwork.
  • Slabs bedded on five dabs of mortar rock within a season. A full bed is the difference.
  • Fence posts rot at ground level, so the post and its fixing decide how long a fence lasts.
  • Deep beds need far less work than narrow borders, because planting closes over the soil.
What we cover in Rugby

The work itself, in plain terms

Landscaping work across Rugby and nearby Hinckley, Leamington Spa and Nuneaton — surfaces, walls, boundaries and clearance.

Patios & paving

Patios built from the ground up — excavation, sub-base, bedding and falls, then the surface everyone actually sees.

Driveways

Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.

Garden & retaining walls

Garden and retaining walls with proper foundations and, where they hold back ground, the drainage that stops them failing.

Fencing & gates

Fencing and gates with concrete posts and gravel boards where longevity matters, timber where appearance does.

Artificial grass

Artificial turf for shaded or heavily used gardens where real grass will not establish, installed on a screeded sub-base.

Garden clearance

Clearing overgrown gardens back to a usable state, with the waste removed under proper duty of care.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

A finish that ages well, on foundations you will never have to think about again.

Landlords

Durable surfaces and sound boundaries, priced separately from anything cosmetic.

New-build & bare plots

Getting the structure right at the start, so the planting has somewhere to succeed.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A patio built up above the damp-proof course, with damp now showing on the inside of that wall.

  • 02

A downpipe discharging onto a new patio, soaking the wall it runs down.

  • 03

Decking that is green and slippery from October, built where the sun never reaches it.

  • 04

A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.

  • 05

A fence that came down in the first gale, with new panels screwed to posts that had already rotted at ground level.

  • 06

A soakaway that never worked, dug into clay that will not accept water.

What we check on a property in Rugby

Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Rugby, and why each one changes the recommendation.

Levels and where water currently goes

We take levels across the area and work out where water runs now. Changing a surface changes drainage, and the commonest complaint after landscaping is water appearing somewhere new.

Access for materials and spoil

Whether a barrow, a digger or only a bucket chain can reach the work area. On enclosed rear gardens this is frequently the single biggest cost driver.

How the space will actually be used

Furniture, a shed, bins, a car turning, children playing — the intended use decides dimensions and surface choice far more usefully than a standard layout.

Ground conditions and what is under the topsoil

Clay, made ground, old foundations or buried hardcore all change the excavation and the base build-up. A trial dig is sometimes the only honest way to price the groundworks.

Lighting and power

If lighting or an outdoor socket might be wanted later, ducting goes in while the ground is open. Adding it afterwards means digging up a finished surface.

Boundary ownership

Before any fence or wall work we establish who owns the boundary and where the line actually runs. Deeds settle it; assumption causes disputes.

What else is near Rugby that you cover?

Rugby sits next to Hinckley (about 12.5 miles away), Leamington Spa (about 12.9 miles away), Nuneaton (about 13.5 miles away) and Kenilworth (about 13.6 miles away). We work across the whole of that cluster, which is part of why we can usually get to a survey quickly — we are often already nearby.

Which part of Rugby do you cover?

All of it — the streets around St Andrew included. Where a property sits matters less to us than what the access is like, which is something we look at on the survey rather than guessing from an address.

Can you clear a badly overgrown garden?

Yes, and it is a common first job. Clearance means cutting back, removing, and taking away the waste, which is usually the larger part of the cost. Two things to flag at survey: a heavily overgrown garden can hide structures, drains and inspection chambers nobody knew about, and clearance between March and August needs care over nesting birds, which are legally protected while nesting.

What is the best time of year for landscaping work?

Hard landscaping can be done most of the year. The real constraints are frost, which stops mortar and concrete work, and sustained wet weather, which makes excavation and compaction impossible to do properly and turns a garden into a mud bath. Spring to autumn is easiest. Winter work is possible on well-drained sites with contingency for weather in the programme.

Which way should a patio fall?

Away from the house, always, at a gentle fall of roughly 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 — enough to shed water without being noticeable underfoot. It must also finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. A patio laid level, or laid up to the brickwork above the damp-proof course, will put water into the wall, and that shows up as internal damp that no amount of treatment inside will fix.

When does a garden wall need to be a retaining wall?

As soon as it is holding back ground on one side. A free-standing garden wall only has to carry its own weight and the wind; a retaining wall is resisting the pressure of soil and the water in it, which is a far greater force. Retaining walls need adequate foundations, the right thickness, often reinforcement, and — critically — drainage behind them. Over about a metre, or where anything is above, it warrants proper design.

Porcelain or natural stone paving?

Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, very low porosity, resists staining and algae, and keeps its colour — but it needs a slurry primer on the back when bedding, and cutting it requires the right blades. Natural stone such as sandstone or limestone has more character and variation, costs less in the mid range, but is porous, so it weathers, grows algae in shade and can stain. Both last decades when laid properly.
