Dry Verge Systems in Coventry
The mortar along the edge of a gable roof was always going to crack and fall out. A dry verge replaces it with interlocking caps that are screwed down and stay put.

A dry verge system in Coventry replaces the sand-and-cement mortar bedding along a gable verge with mechanically fixed interlocking caps. Mortar verges crack as the roof moves and the mortar shrinks, letting water in and dropping debris into the gutter and onto the path below. Dry verge units are screwed to the battens, need no maintenance and ventilate the verge at the same time.
- Mortar verges are a maintenance item: they crack, wash out and need repointing every few years.
- Dry verge caps are mechanically fixed and need no maintenance at all.
- Mortar from a failing verge in your gutter and on your path is the first sign.
- A dry verge also ventilates the verge, which a solid mortar bed does not.
- It is a very cheap addition while a scaffold is already up for roofline or render work.
The work itself, in plain terms
Removing the mortar bedding
The old cracked bedding and pointing raked out along the verge, back to the battens and the edge tiles.
Fitting dry verge units
Interlocking caps screwed to the batten ends, each one overlapping the next so water is thrown clear of the gable.
Ridge end caps & closures
The ridge-to-verge junction closed properly with the matching end cap, which is where a half-done job leaks.
Ventilation
A dry verge ventilates along the gable, helping the roof void breathe rather than sealing it with mortar.
Re-bedding where appropriate
On some period roofs a mortar verge is the correct detail, and we will re-bed it properly rather than impose plastic.
Combined with roofline work
Fitted alongside fascia, soffit, guttering or bargeboard renewal, when the access is already there.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
An end to repointing the verge every few years, and to mortar landing on the drive.
Landlords
A maintenance item removed permanently rather than returning on a cycle.
Roofline projects
A small addition to a fascia and guttering job that pays for itself in avoided future visits.

It is a system of interlocking plastic or metal caps that sit over the edge tiles along a gable and are screwed to the batten ends, replacing the mortar that was traditionally used there. Each cap overlaps the one below, so water is thrown clear of the gable rather than soaking into a cracked mortar bed.
Why does mortar at the verge keep cracking?
Because mortar is rigid and the roof is not. The timber moves with temperature and moisture, the mortar shrinks as it cures and then has nowhere to go, and it cracks. Repointing it restarts the clock rather than solving it, which is why a dry verge is usually the better answer.
Is dry verge suitable for every roof?
Most modern tiled and slated roofs, yes, and it is available to suit common tile profiles. On some period properties a correctly re-bedded mortar verge is the appropriate detail and a plastic cap would look wrong - and in a conservation area that may matter formally. We will tell you where that applies.
Can it be fitted without scaffolding?
On a low bungalow sometimes, from a tower. On a two storey gable it needs proper access, because it runs the full rake of the roof from eaves to ridge. If you have scaffolding up for other work, this is the moment to do it - it is a small cost on top.
Will it look odd on my house?
On a modern tiled roof, no - it is now the standard detail on new build and reads as normal. The caps come in colours to suit common tiles. On an older property with a traditional mortar verge it is more noticeable, which is one reason we would sometimes recommend re-bedding instead.
Does it really need no maintenance?
Effectively none - it is screwed down, not bedded, so there is nothing to shrink or crack. It is worth a glance whenever the gutters are cleared, to confirm nothing has worked loose, but there is no repointing cycle.
