Gutter Repairs in Coventry

A leaking gutter is a small job that causes big ones. Water running down a wall for a winter is how penetrating damp, failed pointing and rotten fascias all start.

In short

Gutter repairs in Coventry cover leaking unions and joints, sagging runs where brackets have failed, cracked or detached downpipes, and blocked outlets. The repair itself is usually quick and inexpensive, but the damage a leak causes to brickwork, render and internal walls is not - so a gutter that has been dripping onto a wall for a season is worth attending to promptly.

Key takeaways
  • A gutter leak is cheap. The damp wall it causes is not.
  • Weeping joints are usually a fall or a support problem, not just a worn seal.
  • A sagging run means brackets have pulled out - often because the fascia behind has rotted.
  • Water running down a wall from a single point is the classic cause of localised penetrating damp.
  • Check it in the rain. A dry gutter tells you very little about where it leaks.
What we cover

The work itself, in plain terms

Leaking joints & unions

Seals replaced, unions refitted and the run re-levelled, because a joint that leaks is usually a joint with water standing in it.

Sagging runs re-supported

New brackets at proper centres, fixed into sound timber - and the fascia dealt with if that is why they let go.

Downpipe repairs

Cracked, split or detached downpipes, loose clips and broken shoes replaced so water reaches the gully.

Blocked outlets & rodding

Outlets and downpipes cleared and rodded, including the underground connection where the blockage is below ground.

Damage behind the leak

The pointing, render or fascia that the leak has been soaking, assessed and repaired so the problem does not simply reappear.

Cast iron repairs

Older cast iron guttering repaired, re-sealed and re-fixed where it is worth keeping rather than replaced wholesale.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

A quick, inexpensive fix before it turns into pointing, render or plastering work.

Landlords & agents

Tenant-reported leaks attended promptly, with a photograph of the cause for the file.

Damp investigations

The outside cause of an internal damp patch found and fixed, which is where most damp investigations should start.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A steady drip from one joint that has left a green stain down the brickwork.

  • 02

A dip in the middle of a gutter run with water and silt sitting in it permanently.

  • 03

Water overflowing at a corner because the outlet or the underground drain is blocked.

  • 04

A downpipe detached at the top, so water pours down the wall from first floor level.

  • 05

Damp on an internal wall that lines up exactly with a leaking gutter joint outside.

  • 06

Guttering pulling away from the fascia, which is a timber problem presenting as a gutter problem.

Why does my gutter joint keep leaking after being resealed?

Because the seal is usually not the root cause. If the run has no fall or has sagged, water stands in the gutter and sits against the joint continuously, which no seal is designed for. Re-levelling the run and adding support fixes it; replacing the seal alone buys a few months.

How urgent is a leaking gutter?

More urgent than it looks. The repair is small and cheap; the consequences - saturated brickwork, failed pointing, blown render, rotten fascia, penetrating damp inside - are expensive. If it has been leaking onto a wall through a winter, there may already be something to put right behind it.

Can you find where it leaks if it is not raining?

Often, from staining, silt lines and standing water. If the leak is intermittent and only shows in heavy rain we can water-test the run, which is the reliable way. It is worth mentioning when it leaks - during rain, after rain, only in wind-driven rain - because each points somewhere different.

Is it worth repairing old cast iron guttering?

Frequently yes, especially on a period property where it suits the house and modern plastic would not. Cast iron can be re-sealed, re-fixed and repainted and will last many more years. Where sections have cracked through or the run is beyond saving, we will say so.

The blockage seems to be underground. Can you clear that?

Usually - outlets and downpipes can be rodded, and the gully or underground connection cleared. If the problem turns out to be a collapsed or root-filled drain rather than a blockage, that is a drainage job and we will tell you what you are actually dealing with.

My gutter is pulling away from the house. Is that just brackets?

Sometimes, but often the fascia board behind has rotted and the screws no longer hold. Refixing into soft timber lasts weeks. We will check what the brackets are going into, and if the timber has gone, the honest answer is the fascia needs addressing - see our fascias and soffits page.
