EV Charger Installation in Coventry

A home charge point is a dedicated circuit, an earthing assessment and a load calculation - which is why the survey matters more than the brand of the unit on the wall.

In short

EV charger installation in Coventry means a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to the charge point, protection appropriate to the unit, and an assessment of the earthing arrangement and the available supply capacity. Most domestic installations are 7kW single phase. The earthing arrangement matters because charge points need protection against a supply PEN fault, which some units provide internally and some do not.

Key takeaways
  • A charge point needs its own dedicated circuit - not a spur off an existing one.
  • The earthing arrangement has to be assessed: charge points require PEN fault protection, built into some units and not others.
  • Your main supply capacity is checked before fitting, so the charger and the shower are not fighting over it.
  • Cable route and parking position matter more than people expect - measure where the car actually sits.
  • Charge points installed since 2022 must have smart functionality under the charge point regulations.
What we cover

The work itself, in plain terms

7kW home charge points

The standard domestic installation: a dedicated single-phase circuit, correctly protected, terminating at a tethered or untethered unit where you want it.

Survey & load assessment

What your supply can actually carry, allowing for the shower, cooker and heating, and whether load management is needed rather than an upgrade.

Earthing & PEN fault protection

The earthing arrangement assessed and the right protection provided - either by a unit with it built in or by a separate device.

Cable routing

A clean route from the board to the parking position, clipped, ducted or buried as the run requires, rather than taped along a wall.

Siting the unit

Positioned for the cable to reach the car's port without stretching across a path - obvious, and routinely got wrong.

Certification & handover

Testing, certification and a walkthrough of the unit and its app, including how to set off-peak charging.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners with off-street parking

A charge point sited and installed properly, with the supply assessed first rather than assumed.

Landlords

Charge points as a letting feature, installed with full certification for the property file.

Workplaces & small sites

Staff and visitor charging, with load assessed across the site rather than per unit.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A charge point fitted on a spur off a ring final, which is neither compliant nor safe.

  • 02

A unit installed with no assessment of the earthing arrangement and no PEN fault protection anywhere.

  • 03

A charger sited where the cable will not reach the car's charging port without crossing a footpath.

  • 04

A main supply already close to capacity, so adding 32A trips the main fuse when the shower runs.

  • 05

Cable run along a wall in trunking that looks temporary because it effectively is.

  • 06

A unit installed with no demonstration, so the owner has never set up off-peak charging and is paying day rates.

Costs

What moves the price

A charge point is quoted after a survey, because the cable run and the state of the existing board drive the price far more than the unit does. What moves the number:

Cable run length and route

Board to parking space: a metre through a garage wall is not the same as 20 metres round a house and under a drive.

Consumer unit condition

Whether there is a spare way with the right protection, or the board needs work before a charger can be added.

Earthing arrangement

Whether PEN fault protection is built into the chosen unit or needs a separate device.

Supply capacity

Whether load management is needed, or in rarer cases a supply upgrade from the network operator.

The unit itself

Tethered or untethered, and the brand and features you choose.

Making good

Reinstating a drive or path where cable has to be buried across it.

EV Charger Installation in Coventry — your questions answered

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most are a half day to a day once surveyed. A long or buried cable run, or work needed on the consumer unit first, extends it. The survey is what tells us which of those applies to you.

Do I need my supply upgraded?

Usually not. Most Coventry homes have enough capacity for a 7kW charge point alongside normal use, and where things are tight, load management on the charger is a far cheaper answer than a supply upgrade. We assess it as part of the survey rather than assuming either way.

Can I charge from a normal socket instead?

A three-pin granny lead works and is fine occasionally, but it is slow and an ordinary socket is not designed for hours of continuous near-maximum load. A dedicated charge point is faster, safer for repeated use, and can be set to charge on an off-peak tariff.

What is PEN fault protection and why does it matter?

On many UK supplies the earth comes from the supply cable's neutral. If that connection fails, metalwork - including a car body on charge - can become live. Charge points must be protected against that, either by a unit with the protection built in or by a separate device. It is not optional, and it is the detail cheap installations miss.

Are there still grants available?

Government support has narrowed considerably and now targets flats, rental properties and people without driveways rather than owner-occupiers with off-street parking. Eligibility changes, so check the current scheme before budgeting on it - we will not quote on the assumption of a grant you may not get.

Can you fit a charger if I park on the street?

Running a cable across a public footpath is not something we will do - it is a trip hazard and generally not permitted. If you have no off-street parking, the practical routes are workplace charging, public rapid chargers, or your council's on-street scheme if it has one.
