External Wall Insulation in Coventry
A solid brick wall has no cavity to fill, so the insulation has to go on one face or the other. Putting it outside keeps your rooms the size they are and deals with the cold bridges.

External wall insulation in Coventry fixes insulation boards to the outside of a solid wall and finishes them with a reinforced render system. It suits the solid-wall housing common in older Coventry streets, where there is no cavity to fill. The detailing is the job: window reveals, sills, eaves, verges and the damp-proof course all have to be extended or reworked for the added thickness.
- EWI is for solid walls. A cavity wall is usually cheaper and easier to insulate by filling the cavity.
- The system adds real thickness, so sills, reveals, eaves and verges all need extending or reworking.
- It must be vapour-permeable and correctly detailed, or you move the condensation problem into the wall.
- It changes the external appearance of the house completely - and may need planning permission.
- Grant-funded work must be done under PAS 2035 by a certified installer. That is a separate route.
The work itself, in plain terms
Insulation & render system
Boards mechanically fixed and bonded to the wall, then a reinforced basecoat with mesh and a through-coloured topcoat.
Reveals, sills & drips
Window and door reveals re-formed, sills extended and drip details added so water is thrown clear of the new face.
Roofline & verges
Eaves, verges and rainwater goods extended to cover the added thickness - the detail that makes EWI look designed rather than applied.
Base & DPC detailing
The system stopped and detailed correctly at the damp-proof course, with a starter track, so it cannot wick moisture from the ground.
Survey & suitability
Establishing whether the wall is genuinely solid, whether it is dry, and whether EWI is the right answer at all.
Making good
Pipework, meter boxes, aerials, lights and soil stacks removed and reinstated on the new face rather than buried.
Built around how you own the property
Solid-wall homes
Pre-1930s Coventry housing with no cavity, where EWI is the main way to insulate the walls at all.
Landlords
Improving the thermal performance of a hard-to-treat property, with the external finish renewed at the same time.
Renovation projects
Insulation combined with a complete external transformation in one scaffold.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
A solid-wall house that is expensive to heat and cold on the inside face of every external wall.
- 02
EWI quoted for a cavity wall, where filling the cavity would be far cheaper and less disruptive.
- 03
An installation where the sills were never extended, so water runs back behind the insulation.
- 04
Insulation taken down below the damp-proof course, wicking ground moisture into the system.
- 05
A non-breathable system on a damp solid wall, trapping moisture and causing problems inside.
- 06
Meter boxes, pipes and lights rendered around rather than relocated, which looks exactly as bad as it sounds.
What moves the price
EWI is quoted after a survey that establishes the wall construction, its condition and all the detailing required. The detailing - reveals, sills, roofline, services - is a large share of the cost and the part cheap quotes leave out. What moves the price:
Wall area and elevations
Square metreage, plus every corner and opening that needs detailing.
Insulation thickness and type
Driven by the performance you are targeting and by how much thickness the roofline can absorb.
Roofline work
Extending eaves and verges, and renewing fascias, soffits and guttering to suit the new face.
Openings
The number of windows and doors, since each needs reveals, a sill extension and a drip detail.
Services to relocate
Meter boxes, external taps, lights, pipework and soil stacks.
Scaffolding
Full elevations for an extended period, since this is a multi-stage system.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Is my house suitable for external wall insulation?
It depends first on whether the walls are solid or cavity. EWI is the answer for solid walls, which in Coventry generally means pre-1930s housing. If you have a cavity, filling it is usually far cheaper and less disruptive, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a render system you do not need. The wall also needs to be dry and sound first.
Will it change how my house looks?
Completely - it becomes a rendered house. For some properties that is a welcome transformation; on attractive original brickwork it is a real loss, and internal insulation may be the better answer despite costing you room space. Conservation areas and listed buildings have their own constraints, and planning permission can be required.
Can it cause damp?
Badly specified or badly detailed, yes. A sealed system on a solid wall, or insulation taken below the damp-proof course, traps moisture and causes problems rather than solving them. Correctly done - vapour-permeable system, proper base and DPC detailing, extended sills and drips - it reduces condensation because the inside face of the wall is no longer cold.
What about grants?
Funded schemes exist for solid-wall insulation, and work carried out under them must follow PAS 2035 and be installed by a certified installer with the relevant accreditation. That is a different procurement route from a private job, and we will tell you plainly if that is the route you should be taking rather than paying privately.
What happens to my window sills and the roof overhang?
They have to be dealt with, and this is where EWI jobs are won or lost. The system adds thickness, so sills need extending, reveals re-forming with drip details, and the eaves and verges extending so the roof still throws water clear of the wall. A quote that does not mention any of this is not a complete quote.
How long does it take?
Several weeks for a typical house, because it is a multi-stage system with curing time between coats, plus the roofline and detailing work. Weather affects the render stages. It is a bigger and more disruptive project than rendering alone, and worth planning around.
