K-Rend in Coventry is a through-coloured silicone render applied over a reinforced basecoat and finished with a scraped texture, typically a 6mm grain scraped back once it has firmed up. It is water-repellent and vapour-permeable, needs no painting, and relies on properly embedded mesh and bead detailing. Timing the scrape correctly is what produces an even texture across an elevation.
- The scrape has to be timed right across a whole elevation - too early or too late and the texture varies visibly.
- Through-coloured, so no painting and no repainting.
- Work an elevation in one go wherever possible; stopping mid-wall risks a visible join.
- The mesh in the basecoat is what controls cracking.
- Weather matters more than with paint - it cannot be applied or scraped in frost or heavy rain.
The work itself, in plain terms
Substrate preparation
The existing surface assessed, repaired and primed so the system bonds properly rather than being applied over a problem.
Reinforced basecoat
Basecoat with alkali-resistant mesh fully embedded and lapped, which is what resists cracking across the elevation.
Bead & reveal detailing
Corner, stop and bellcast beads, window and door reveals, drips and sills - the details that separate a sharp job from a rough one.
Scraped topcoat
The through-coloured topcoat applied and then scraped back at the right moment to expose an even aggregate texture.
New build & renovation
Extensions, whole houses and single elevations, with the texture and colour matched across new and existing work.
Junctions & roofline
Render stopped correctly at the roofline, verges and damp-proof course rather than run into them.
Built around how you own the property
Renovation projects
A uniform modern finish over mixed brickwork, old render or an extension that never matched.
New build & extensions
The standard finish on much new work, applied with the detailing that makes it look deliberate.
Landlords
A hard-wearing external finish with no decorating cycle attached to it.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
Patchy texture across an elevation, because the scrape was timed differently on different sections.
- 02
A visible vertical join halfway along a wall where work stopped for the day.
- 03
Cracking along the line of a mesh lap that was never properly overlapped.
- 04
Render run down to ground level with no bellcast bead, drawing moisture into the wall.
- 05
Thick, clumsy window reveals where no beads were used.
- 06
An extension rendered in a colour that does not quite match the original house, now permanently obvious.

Speak to us today0786 5778332What is the difference between K-Rend and silicone render generally?
K-Rend is a brand of through-coloured silicone render, best known for its scraped-texture finishes. The principles are the same as any thin-coat silicone system - meshed basecoat, beads, through-coloured topcoat - and the differences are in the specific products, colour range and textures. We will talk through which system suits your wall.
Why does the texture sometimes look uneven?
Because the scrape is time-sensitive. The topcoat has to firm up to the right point before it is scraped back, and that point moves with temperature, wind and sun. Scraping one section too early and another too late produces visible variation. It is why an elevation should be worked continuously by people watching it.
Can you match existing K-Rend on an extension?
We can get close, and in many cases very close, but an exact match on a weathered elevation is not realistic - the existing render has aged. The honest options are to match as closely as possible, or to render the whole elevation so it is uniform. We will show you a sample on the wall first.
Does it need any maintenance?
Very little. It is water-repellent so it stays cleaner than painted render, and the colour does not flake. North-facing and shaded elevations can pick up some green algae over time, which washes off. No repainting cycle.
Can it be applied in winter?
Not in frost, and not when frost is forecast before it has cured, and not in driving rain. In Coventry that rules out a fair number of winter days. We would rather reschedule than apply a system that will cure badly - the finish is permanent and the weather window is not worth gambling.
Do I need scaffolding?
For anything above single-storey height, yes. Thin-coat render needs to be applied and scraped continuously across an elevation, with both hands free and the whole wall reachable - which is not possible off a ladder. It is in the quote.
