Pebbledash Removal in Coventry
Taking pebbledash off is dirty, noisy and the only way to find out what is behind it. What you find decides whether the house gets re-rendered or goes back to bare brick.

Pebbledash removal in Coventry means hacking the existing dash and its backing coat off the brickwork, assessing and repairing the substrate underneath, and then re-rendering in a modern through-coloured system or making good the exposed brick. The brickwork beneath is often in worse condition than expected, because pebbledash was frequently applied to hide it in the first place.
- Pebbledash was often applied to hide poor or mismatched brickwork - expect to find a reason it went on.
- Removal is messy. Protection of windows, paths and neighbouring property is part of the job.
- Going back to bare brick is only realistic if the brickwork underneath is genuinely sound and attractive.
- Rendering over sound pebbledash is sometimes a legitimate alternative and considerably cheaper.
- On a solid wall, whatever replaces it should be breathable rather than a sealed cement render.
The work itself, in plain terms
Hacking off
The dash and its backing coat removed back to the masonry, with the building and surroundings properly protected from the dust and debris.
Substrate assessment
What is actually underneath - brick condition, spalling, old repairs, previous openings - assessed and photographed before the next step is agreed.
Brickwork repairs
Spalled bricks cut out and replaced, joints raked and repointed, and cracks stitched so the new finish goes onto something sound.
Re-rendering
A modern through-coloured silicone or thin-coat system over a meshed basecoat, with proper beads and bellcast detailing.
Back to brick
Where the brickwork is genuinely good, cleaning down and repointing instead of re-rendering - which is sometimes the better house.
Detailing & making good
Reveals, sills, drips and roofline junctions reinstated, and the surroundings cleaned down properly afterwards.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
A dated, cracked, stained finish replaced with something that changes how the house looks entirely.
Period property owners
Advice on whether the brickwork underneath is worth exposing, and a breathable finish if it is not.

The single biggest change you can make to kerb appeal on a pebbledashed house.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
Pebbledash that is cracked, stained and holding water, with sections sounding hollow when tapped.
- 02
Patches of dash that have come off completely, showing a different colour backing coat.
- 03
Brickwork under the dash in poor condition, which is usually why it was dashed.
- 04
A removal job quoted without any allowance for what will be found underneath.
- 05
Dash removed and replaced with hard cement render on a solid wall, which traps moisture.
- 06
Neighbouring cars, windows and paths covered in debris because nothing was sheeted.
What moves the price
Pebbledash removal is quoted in two parts - the removal, and whatever follows it - because what is underneath cannot be fully known until it is off. We give you a price for removal and re-render with a clear allowance for substrate repairs, and anything beyond it is photographed and agreed before we continue. What moves the price:
Area and elevations
How much comes off, and how many corners, reveals and features are involved.
How well bonded it is
Well-keyed dash takes far longer to remove than dash that is already failing.
Substrate condition
Spalled brick, failed pointing and old repairs needing attention before re-rendering.
Scaffolding
Needed for both removal and re-render, and for longer than either alone.
What replaces it
Through-coloured silicone, a traditional render, or cleaning and repointing back to brick.
Protection and disposal
Sheeting, protection of neighbouring property, and the considerable volume of waste.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Can I just render over the pebbledash instead?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking about because it is considerably cheaper. If the dash is sound, well bonded and not standing too proud, it can be dubbed out and worked over. If it sounds hollow in places or is already coming away, rendering over it transfers the problem to your new finish - and we will say so rather than take the easier job.
What will the brickwork look like underneath?
Honestly, often not good - pebbledash was frequently applied in the first place to cover poor, mismatched or repaired brickwork, or to deal with a damp problem. Sometimes it is lovely. We can usually get a sense by looking at any patches already missing, and we photograph the whole wall once it is off so you can decide with the facts.
How messy is it?
Very. It is percussive work producing a large volume of hard debris and a lot of dust. Windows, doors, paths, planting and neighbouring property get sheeted and protected before anything starts, and the site is cleaned down at the end of each day. Warn your neighbours - we will too.
Could there be asbestos in it?
Pebbledash itself is not normally an asbestos material, but older textured coatings elsewhere on a property can be, and some mid-century renders contained additives. If we see anything that raises a question we stop and get it tested rather than carry on - that is not a corner to cut.
Should I re-render in cement or something breathable?
On a solid-wall house, breathable, every time. A hard cement render seals the wall, so moisture that gets in leaves through the bricks instead and the faces spall off. A modern silicone thin-coat system is water-repellent from outside but vapour-permeable, which is what an older wall needs.
How long does the whole job take?
Usually a few weeks for a whole house, split between removal, substrate repairs and re-render, with curing time between render coats. The removal itself is quick and brutal; the preparation and the finish are what take the time.
