Fencing & Gates in Coventry

Fences fail at the posts, and almost always at ground level. Everything about a fence lasting comes down to what the posts are and how they are fixed.

In short

Fencing in Coventry covers close board and feather edge, panel fencing, and gates, fixed to timber or concrete posts set in concrete. Posts are what fail first, almost always at ground level where moisture and air meet, so concrete posts or timber in metal shoes outlast timber set directly in the ground. Gravel boards keep the panel out of the wet. Fences are generally allowed to 2m, or 1m adjoining a highway.

Key takeaways
  • Posts fail at ground level. Concrete posts, or timber in a metal shoe, outlast timber set in the ground.
  • Gravel boards keep the bottom of the panel out of the soil and add years to the fence.
  • Generally 2m is the planning limit, or 1m where the fence adjoins a highway.
  • Establish whose fence it is before replacing it - the deeds usually indicate, and the neighbour always has an opinion.
  • A gate needs a stronger post than a fence run, because it carries a swinging load all day.
What we cover

The work itself, in plain terms

Close board & feather edge

Built in situ on rails rather than dropped in as panels, which makes it stronger, more private and easier to repair.

Panel fencing

Lap, overlap and decorative panels between concrete or timber posts - the quickest and most economical option.

Posts set properly

Concrete posts, or timber in metal shoes or set in concrete with the right depth, because this is where fences die.

Gravel boards & trims

Concrete or timber gravel boards keeping the panel clear of the ground, plus post caps and capping rails.

Gates

Side gates, double gates and driveway gates hung on posts sized for the load, with ironmongery that still works in five years.

Repairs & replacement runs

Replacing failed posts or sections without taking down a whole fence that is otherwise sound.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

A fence that stays upright through the winter gales, with posts chosen to outlast the panels.

Landlords

Secure, low-maintenance boundaries that do not generate callouts after every storm.

Pet & child safety

Gap-free close board with gravel boards and a properly latching gate.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A fence leaning after a gale, with every post snapped off at exactly ground level.

  • 02

Panels rotting from the bottom because they sit directly in the soil with no gravel board.

  • 03

Posts set in a shallow hole with a bag of dry postcrete tipped in and never wetted.

  • 04

A gate dropped and dragging, because it was hung on a standard fence post.

  • 05

A fence replaced along the wrong line, and a neighbour disputing the boundary afterwards.

  • 06

A 2m fence put up adjoining the pavement, where the limit is 1m.

Concrete posts or timber?

Concrete posts last considerably longer and are what we would normally recommend, because posts are what fail. Timber looks better and can be set in metal shoes or concrete to extend its life considerably. What we would avoid is bare timber set straight into soil - that is the arrangement that snaps at ground level in the first serious wind.

How high can my fence be?

Generally up to 2m, but only 1m where it adjoins a highway or footpath - which catches a lot of front boundaries. Above those you need planning permission. If your property is listed or in a conservation area there may be further restrictions.

Whose fence is it?

Your title plan may show T-marks indicating responsibility, but plenty of deeds are silent and plenty of neighbours disagree. The practical advice is to check the deeds, then talk to the neighbour before you take anything down. Replacing a fence on a line that turns out to be disputed is an expensive way to find out.

Close board or panels?

Close board is built on site, board by board, so it is stronger, more private, has no gaps, and individual boards can be replaced. Panels are quicker and cheaper and perfectly adequate in a sheltered position. In an exposed garden close board on concrete posts is the one that is still standing in ten years.

Can you just replace the broken posts?

Often yes, and it is much cheaper than a new fence. If the panels or boards are sound and only the posts have gone, replacing posts and gravel boards gives you most of a new fence's life for a fraction of the cost. We will tell you when the rest is too far gone for that to be worth it.

What about the old fence and the waste?

We take it away and dispose of it as part of the job, and you should be given the paperwork for the waste transfer. Ask for it from anyone who removes waste from your property - it is your duty of care as well as theirs.
