Garden & Retaining Walls in Coventry

A garden wall is simple until it is holding back ground. A retaining wall has water pressure behind it, and dealing with that water is the whole job.

In short

Garden walls in Coventry are built on a proper concrete foundation with a damp-proof course, movement joints on longer runs and a coping to shed water. Retaining walls additionally need drainage behind them - free-draining backfill, a land drain and weep holes - because water pressure, not soil, is what pushes walls over. Walls above about a metre retaining ground usually need structural design.

Key takeaways
  • Retaining walls fail because of water pressure behind them, not the weight of the soil.
  • Free-draining backfill, a land drain and weep holes are what make a retaining wall last.
  • Planning generally allows 2m, or 1m where the wall adjoins a highway - above that you need permission.
  • A coping is not decoration: it stops water soaking into the top of the wall and blowing the bricks in frost.
  • Longer runs need movement joints, or they crack in predictable places.
What we cover

The work itself, in plain terms

Boundary & garden walls

Brick and block walls on proper foundations, with DPC, movement joints and a coping or capping to finish.

Retaining walls

Designed for what they are holding back, with drainage behind, weep holes through and engineer's input where the height requires it.

Drainage behind the wall

Free-draining backfill and a perforated land drain taken to a suitable outfall - the part that is skipped on walls that later lean.

Piers, steps & planters

Gate piers, raised beds, planters and garden steps, built in materials that match the house or the existing walls.

Repairs & rebuilding

Leaning, cracked and bulging walls taken down and rebuilt, with the cause fixed rather than repeated.

Copings & finishing

Brick-on-edge, stone or concrete copings bedded and pointed to shed water clear of the face.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

Boundary and garden walls built to last, in brick that matches what is already there.

Sloping gardens

Terracing a slope into usable levels with retaining walls that are designed rather than guessed.

Landlords & agents

Leaning or unsafe boundary walls made safe and rebuilt properly, with the liability dealt with.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A retaining wall leaning out at the top, because there is no drainage behind it and water is pushing it over.

  • 02

A garden wall with no foundation, built straight onto soil, now cracked and out of plumb.

  • 03

No coping, so water soaks into the top of the wall and the bricks are spalling after each frost.

  • 04

A long run of wall with no movement joints, cracked at regular intervals.

  • 05

A wall built in hard cement on soft old bricks, with the brick faces now blowing.

  • 06

A raised bed built against the house above the damp-proof course, causing damp inside.

Why do retaining walls fall over?

Water. Saturated ground behind a wall exerts far more pressure than dry soil, and most failed retaining walls were built with no drainage behind them. Free-draining backfill, a land drain at the base and weep holes through the wall let that water out, and a wall with those will long outlast a thicker wall without them.

How high can I build without planning permission?

Generally up to 2m, or 1m where the wall adjoins a highway or footpath. Above those heights you need permission. Separately, a retaining wall of any real height needs structural design regardless of planning, because planning and structural adequacy are different questions.

Does a garden wall need a foundation?

Yes - a concrete foundation below ground, sized for the wall and the ground conditions. Walls built directly onto soil or a couple of slabs move with the seasons and crack, and no amount of pointing fixes that afterwards.

Who owns the boundary wall?

Your deeds or the Land Registry plan will usually indicate it, though they are often less clear than people hope. If it is shared or you are unsure, talk to your neighbour before work starts - and if the wall is a party structure, the Party Wall Act may apply. Far cheaper than a dispute.

Can you match my existing brickwork?

Usually, and on a boundary wall it matters because a mismatched section is visible from both gardens for ever. We match brick and mortar as closely as available stock allows, including reclaimed where the original is discontinued, and show you before building.

My wall is leaning. Can it be repaired or does it need rebuilding?

It depends on why. A wall leaning from water pressure or a failed foundation usually has to come down and be rebuilt with the cause fixed - propping and repointing a leaning wall just delays it. We will tell you which it is, and we will say if it is unsafe.
